Small School, Big Goals

Delungra Public School registered with Koala Smart in 2020 and is fortunate to be located near koala habitat. But students became concerned by the devastation caused by the drought and decided to help the environment to recover. They researched the specific varieties preferred by local koalas and set about propagating and growing eucalyptus tree seedlings.

The school received a Grant from the NSW Government to assist with the tree growing project which also included the construction of a greenhouse.

The seedlings were to be distributed throughout the community for residents to plant around their properties in an attempt to regenerate habitat and food for wildlife.

Their efforts have also been supported by local WIRES volunteers who rescued sick koalas found on school grounds. Once nursed back to health, they are returned to the wild.

Funding also enabled information sessions and related excursions.
