Action (Design Thinking)
Description:
One class from Kempsey Adventist School is using technology to improve the safety and health of koalas. They are focusing on one of the biggest threats to koalas – motor vehicle strikes.
The class is developing an app, called Koala 000, that uses geo-location data to record the exact site of an injured or dying koala on the road. Previously carers would receive inaccurate location data which would result in longer lead times before a carer could reach a koala struck by a vehicle. Reducing the time a carer takes to respond can improve the koala’s chance of survival.
Implementation:
Koala Smart connected the students with Charles Sturt University and with the support of their Masters Students the group is developing the app for public release.
OUTCOMES:
• Class can share the knowledge they have gained from creating this technology with other students
• Class has an active role in decreasing koala fatalities
